I recently finished reading this book. My friend, Katie, read the series and gave them to me. There are 5 books in the series and this is the first one. (I just started #3.) I was able to read the quite quickly even for my slow-reading self. This book made me not like shopping. Or at least I get much less excited about it. I know I am going to be banned from the girls shopping club for saying this, but I didn't know a lot of the brand-name-dropping that went on in the book. I guess I am just too cheap. I am sure I am also going to want to watch the movie. Maybe I will be able to convince Katie to see it with me sometime. *hint hint* 🙂 So if you want a fun, quick read, check these out.

One Fifth Avenue
I just finished reading this book. Well, I guess I can't really claim I read ALL of it. I read the first 1/3 or so of the book and then I skimmed the rest. I just couldn't get myself into it. It was a cute book, but I wasn't really into the New York life. It was a bit like Sex and the City. Which was a great show, but I was having a hard time keeping my interest with the book.
It's an easy read if you want something kind of silly and mindless. But I can't recommend it too much since I didn't really read it all. 🙂
A Thousand Splendid Suns
I just finished this book last night and loved it. I have been reading it a while…because I am a slow reader and always find something else to do instead of read. AND you have seen pictures of what happens to me when I do get around to reading.
This was by the same author as The Kite Runner which I read a while back, Kaled Hosseini. This was different than the first book he did, but had similar undertones. I was fascinated by the fact that he wrote this book from the perspective of a woman. I never would have guessed that a man wrote it if I read it without knowing. He made the characters come alive and you felt like you really knew them by the time the book was finished.
It was not the happiest of books, but I think that was part of the appeal of it to me. It wasn't sugar-coated and you felt like you were there experiencing things with them. His imagery was incredible. I found myself laughing out loud a couple times and I even brought my hand to my mouth in horror a few times. I feel like I know a little more about the life people live in Afghanistan even if it wasn't a depiction of real people. This was the story of the people you don't hear about and the ones who make the most of what they have. They take what each day gives them as best they can and I admired their strength!
You won't be sorry if you read this book.
The Last Lecture
Chuck got this book for Christmas and said I HAD to read it. I have been doing some soul searching and this was a good book to read during something like this.
This book was so inspirational. It makes you look at your life and what you want to become and do with your life. It makes you think about what is important and what isn't. Things happen that you can't do anything about (like getting Pancreatic Cancer, like the author), but you need to deal with the unexpected and do all you can with the time that you have.
Another thing he talks about is to dream big and go after those dreams. Nothing is too big. I have a hard time doing that. I have a tendency to think about only things I think I can do instead of what I may be able to do with some effort and hard work. I need to believe in myself more and believe that I can do anything. Once I believe that…I will be able to dream big!
I think anyone can read this book and get something out of it. It a fast read and you'll even laugh out loud a couple times. Happy reading!
Eat Pray Love
I am the slowest readers in the world. I had been reading this book for ages and finally finished not to long ago (and have since finished another book I'll write about soon). I had heard many good things about this book and we had talked about reading it for Book Club (which isn't held in the winter months). So I gave it a try. It was a good book. Hard for me to get into. The author did a great job writing and is very witty. It was a very empowering (maybe that isn't the word I want).
She put her life back together after some very hard times and found a way to bring balance in as well. I think it puts things into perspective about what you want and that you sometimes need to do things you want to do, just to do them! I guess there is going to be a sequel coming out at some point, and I am sure I will read that since I am a sucker for sequels and (especially) trilogies! So strange, I know.
If you are looking for a pretty no-brainer book that will make you laugh out loud at times…this will do it. 🙂 And I promise it won't take you as long as it took me to read! 🙂
Living Still Life
This book is Living Still Life by Ryan Kurr. I have not read this book yet, but I am hoping I'll get it for Christmas. If not, I may just have to get it myself. I went to High School with the author. We didn't hang out, but my best friend in High School was great friends with him. Knowing him, I have no doubt that it will be wonderfully written book with beautiful prose, most likely something to relate to and a book you won't want to put down. I can't wait to get my hands on it and start reading!
If any of you have come across it and read it, please let me know what you thought of it!
Buried Lies
Chuck coached with a guy who, after retirement, decided he wanted to start writing books. He has three already written and just recently released his fourth book called “Buried Lies”. You can read more about Peter and his books at his website PRennebohm.com. He just recently did a book signing for this new release, but we weren't able to go. So I thought you might be interested in checking it out. I thought it was cool to know someone that wrote a book…or four!
That reminds me. My mom said that someone in our extended family wrote a book, too. I will have to find out what that is and post it. I guess I know more authors than I thought! 🙂
Kite Runner
The book we read this time for Book Club was Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This was my pick and I am glad I did. Chuck had read it a while ago and told me I had to read it, too. I really liked it. It was hard to read at times, but wonderfully written. I am going to read this author's other book, too! I have another I might read first. We are meeting tonight to talk about the book. I think we are going to take a hiatus for a while from Book club during the winter because we get together for Card/Game Night then. But if you haven't read this one yet, definitely pick it up!
I Finished Reading Water For Elephants
I have finished this book…actually, it was some time last week that I had it done. We are meeting for Book Club on it next week. I really liked the book. I thought it was entertaining and a fun read. It wasn't a complicated story and was easy to follow. I thought the author did a good job making the reader feel like they were part of the story. It helps that I really put myself into the places the book talks about. So I felt like an onlooker during the whole book and really liked (and disliked) the characters. I would definitely recommend this book. So if you are looking for a good book to pass the time on the weekend at the cabin….pick this one up!
Water For Elephants
This is the next book we are reading for book club. It's called Water For Elephants. So far it's pretty funny. Well, the writing is funny, not necessarily what happens (I am only 3 chapters in). It's a pretty easy read even for someone slow like me. I'm excited to read more and see what happens.
I am always looking for more books to add to my list of ones to read. So if you have any suggestions or ones you have read recently that you enjoyed, let me know. 🙂
