Burnt Out & Lazy…Time To Start Fresh

Posted on April 17, 2013 by Andi

I’m struggling to find balance. I need to find my happy place and regroup. I need to stop stressing about things I can’t control (or don’t need to control), not get frustrated with my toddler (she’s just a toddler… and such a wonderful one 99.9% of the time) and take more time to be patient, happy and thankful for all I have.

This isn’t necessarily about one specific thing. It’s about many things. And nothing.

First, I need to say my MOMS Club is wonderful. I love all the ladies I have met and that many of them are such dear friends to me! MOMS Club is kind of my second job and I take it seriously and work hard doing a good job being our chapter president. But I’ve been doing a ton for it and I’m getting stressed and burnt out.

It’s not one particular issue. I think it’s more me. I am a pleaser and try to make everyone happy and accommodate what everyone wants. But I struggle to make decisions and fear I will upset someone with the choices I make. At the same time, just because I’m president doesn’t mean it’s all up to me. This is a group and everyone contributes to make it great. But not everyone will be happy 100% of the time. And I need to realize and accept that.

And honestly, if someone wants my mostly thankless, volunteer gig as president, we are up for elections. Feel free to run. But when no one steps up, that just makes me work harder to make it all go smoothly and keep the members happy. I want everyone to love this group as much as I do and want to make some effort to make it the best it can be!

Maybe my hopes and expectations are too high.

On another front….my home. I have been slacking and been lacking motivation. I think part of it is this weather and my need to get outside with the girls. I feel so pent up. I try to have something planned everyday. It’s good to keep Maddie busy and it keeps me from being stir crazy.

But as I sit here looking at all the toys that need to be picked up, my long “to do” list and my urge to minimize clutter….all I will probably get done is blogging (with one finger on my iPad while Dannie eats/sleeps), maybe some reading and checking Facebook. Then when I go to bed, I’ll feel guilty for sitting around and not accomplishing more. I’ll feel like a terrible wife for not having a spotless house when my husband gets home (because really, I stay home with my kids…why isn’t my house spotless?), guilty for not making dinner (even though my very wonderful, loving husband has been volunteering to do it) and generally looking back at my day knowing I could (and should have) done more.

I want to be that super mom that remembers everything, flutters around the house effortlessly making everything she touches perfect and can sit on the couch with her husband happily at night knowing she got it all done.

In reality, we will push toys out of our way with our feet to get the ottoman near the sofa, brush Lord-knows-what snack off the sofa cushions and I will fall asleep with my mouth hanging open, drooling at 8:45. Isn’t that a vision of sexy right there!?

I’m really excited about my upcoming Pilates class. I think I need the adrenaline from the exercise and an hour of “me” time. Heck, I’m looking forward to the car ride there just so I can listen to music instead of Curious George and Finding Nemo for a few minutes. I also need to use my massage gift card I got for my birthday (in November) and finally schedule a haircut. I haven’t had my hair cut since before Maddie turned 1 (in February….2011)!

So, with all the changes we have made to our health lately (which is going great!), I think it’s time for me to refocus and stop being so stinking lazy! I’ll get right on that….when nap time is over.

Easter

Posted on April 17, 2013April 16, 2013 by Andi

We had wonderful and fairly laid back Easter celebration. My mom, stepdad, brothers and sister-in-law came over. We colored eggs, had a yummy meal, peeps for second breakfast, searched for eggs, enjoyed our Easter baskets and took some pictures. It was a wonderful day full of fun and laughter!

Maddie loved finding the plastic eggs that were filled with “monies.” I had a couple filled with cheddar bunnies and she would throw the bunnies in the trash. She was not happy those weren’t filled with money, too. Smile

Cousin Love

Posted on April 16, 2013April 16, 2013 by Andi

We try to get together with Chuck’s sister once a week or so. We went to their house for dinner the other night and I got some cute pictures of all the girls!

Amira is walking now, so she has become a lot more fun to Maddie. They play together so well! I can’t wait for Dannie to be more mobile so they can play together. (Ok, I can wait for her to be mobile, but I am excited for them to play together!)

I love that they girls get to play together so often and that they are close in age! How fun to have best friends right in the family! It’s funny to think that a little over 2 years ago there weren’t any cousins…and now there are three girls! Smile

5 Months

Posted on April 15, 2013April 15, 2013 by Andi

20130415_183900

Dannie turned 5 months old over the weekend. I’m a couple days behind getting this posted.

20130319_102040

She still loves her hands and has been getting more coordinated with her toys. She can grab them and hold on to them and seems to enjoy playing with them more.

20130410_090940

20130412_160837

We started putting her in her jumper toy this past month and she really likes it. She loves sitting up and being part of the action. Maddie is always close by when she is in the jumper and brings her toys, sings, dances and plays with her. It’s adorable.

20130415_184732

20130415_184758

Dannie is still only rolling from her back to her stomach, but not back to her back. She looks like she is about to, but she hasn’t done it consistently yet. She’s really strong on her stomach, though and really pushes herself up.

20130415_184533

I think Dannie might be starting to get a tooth because she loves this banana toy and will chomp on your finger or other toys. She likes ice toys, too. Maddie got her first tooth at 6 months, so we shall see when this one gets teeth!

20130415_184019

She loves when you hold her up so she is standing. She just giggles.

“If You’re Happy And You Know It” is her favorite song right now. She laughs so hard when you clap her hands together or do “hooray!” She also loves when we read books. Mostly they are the books Maddie wants to read, but she still watches intently!

Maddie loves playing in Dannie’s crib with her!

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

Posted on April 11, 2013April 11, 2013 by Andi

I was browsing the books on the library’s website and I came across this book…Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. I couldn’t help myself and had to download it. Who cares that I am in the middle of 5 other books at the moment including one for book club. I wouldn’t consider myself a very fast reader and I finished this in less than 3 days! I couldn’t put it down! I may have read it so quickly because it is a young adult book, but still….I really liked it. Here’s a little summary:

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs.

It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

It was a fun story and a quick read. I highly recommend this if you are looking for a fun book with a little mystery and some twists and turns. And if you like it, there will be a sequel coming out in 2014.

Oh, and if you have an e-reader, you should check out the books you can get from the library. When I first got my Kindle, there weren’t too many books you could download. There are boatloads now and I can’t wait to read more of them! So I am glad I took a peek to see what they had to offer.

Happy reading!

A Speaker & An Update On Our Eating

Posted on April 4, 2013April 5, 2016 by Andi

Today at my MOMS Club meeting, we had a speaker come to talk to us about nutrition and snacks for kids. A couple months ago, all of this would have been new information to me. But after a couple months of eating well, I was proud and happy that I knew a lot of the information he provided. Nonetheless, he gave us some great ideas for snacks for kids (or adults), making healthier choices and some substitutions you can use in your cooking.

Here is a list of some healthy snacks we were given for you and your kiddos.

  • Yogurt (but check the ingredient list…some are better options than others)
  • Carrots and celery
  • No sugar added peanut butter and whole grain crackers
  • Milk and fruit
  • Cheese
  • Hummus with veggies or whole grain crackers/pita
  • All natural peanut butter or almond butter
  • Turkey bacon with no nitrites
  • Homemade sweet potato fries
  • Veggies and dip (Vegannaise makes a great base for dips)
  • Homemade mini pizza with cheese or veggie toppings
  • Fruits
  • Nuts
  • Homemade smoothie
  • Homemade trail mix
  • Hard boiled egg or egg salad
  • Tortilla (all natural or whole grain) with cheese and salsa on top
  • Homemade ice cream (with all natural ingredients…you know what goes into it)
  • Fruit or veggie kabobs

My favorite snacks right now are Triscuits (only 3 ingredients) with hummus, Pretzel Crisps (4 ingredients) with hummus and Jack’s Special Salsa (I like the medium). I love using this salsa on tacos, quesadillas and on homemade pizza! My favorite hummus right now is Sabra and I like the “Supremely Spicy” or “Roasted Red Pepper.”

His wife writes a blog and documents meals she makes. I scrolled through and found so many that I wanted to try. The website is called Premier Life Eating. Not all of her posts have pictures, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to try them! I just like pictures so I know if I am doing it right or mine turns out correctly. Smile

As far as an update for how we are doing with our new lifestyle…we are doing great! We are finding more new foods to try, both at home and when we eat out. I have become way more adventurous and I look forward to my flavor-filled meals! I have gotten Maddie to try more foods. Many days she still wants noodles or chicken nuggets, but she is given whole grain, organic or healthier options of these things. I have also tried to get her better snack options for when we are out. And she is two, so yes, she still has days where she will eat cookies or chips for a meal. Pick your battles! Smile

The other night, I made spaghetti with whole wheat noodles, Veggie Prego (has more veggies in it) then I added ground turkey meatballs and two cups of extra veggies into the sauce (onions, peppers, carrots, zucchini) and it was DELICIOUS! We had enough for two meals and I loved it just as much the second time and cleaned my plate. Two months ago, there was NO WAY I would have eaten all the vegetables in that dish.

I am very proud of how far I have come in such a short time. I even ordered a salad for my lunch today and LOVED it! Who am I? Smile I was skeptical of this change, but I am so glad that we did it. And I thank my dear husband for giving us the push we needed to make it happen!

Beyond Belief

Posted on April 2, 2013April 2, 2013 by Andi

Beyond-Belief

My book club read Beyond Belief: My Secret Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape by Jenna Miscavige Hill for our March book. This book was interesting to say the least. There were times I was horrified, aggravated, relieved, hopeful, disappointed….so many feelings went through me during this book. If you have ever been curious about Scientology, this is a fascinating book to read. Here is a summary of the book:

Jenna Miscavige Hill, niece of Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige, was raised as a Scientologist but left the controversial religion in 2005. In Beyond Belief, she shares her true story of life inside the upper ranks of the sect, details her experiences as a member Sea Org—the church’s highest ministry, speaks of her “disconnection” from family outside of the organization, and tells the story of her ultimate escape.

In this tell-all memoir, complete with family photographs from her time in the Church, Jenna Miscavige Hill, a prominent critic of Scientology who now helps others leave the organization, offers an insider’s profile of the beliefs, rituals, and secrets of the religion that has captured the fascination of millions, including some of Hollywood’s brightest stars such as Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

One big complaint I had about the book is that there seemed to be too much detail from a single day or event for my liking. There were times I wanted to skip ahead and times when I just skimmed because it was the same “story” again. But overall, she did a good job giving her best recollection of the events from her childhood. And I know that she was trying to document all of the events, but I found myself a little bored at times.

Also there were A LOT of acronyms in the book and it was quite difficult to keep track of them all. I read this on my Kindle and when I got to the end, I found out there was a list of all the terms she used. That would have been useful while I was reading it. So if you don’t have a Kindle, you might benefit from reading a paper copy to reference this list.

Nonetheless, this was a captivating book and makes me so sad for the children in Scientology and I hope more Scientologists are able to make their way out like Jenna did.
