Good Times Park

Posted on May 1, 2013 by Andi

Today we checked out a new park that opened in Eagan. It’s called Good Times Park. It’s an indoor playground/gym/picnic place/art station/bouncy pillow/soccer field. It wasn’t too crowded and the kids (ages almost 2-almost 4) had a great time!

Some pros:

  • It wasn’t real crowded. (Probably because the opened last week and not many people know about it.)
  • There are lots of things for the kids to do. We were there for over 3 hours and the kids only stopped running and playing to eat.
  • There are good activities for various ages.
  • You can bring your own food in to eat at the picnic area.
  • They don’t sell soda in the vending machine and most of the snacks aren’t too terrible.
  • It was very clean. (Also probably because it is so new.)
  • There’s a separate changing area with tables, a bench, trash and a sink.
  • You can pay ahead of time. Since there isn’t any staff to let you in or take your money, you do it yourself.

Some cons:

  • It’s a little expensive. I am not sure I would go many times in the summer as the weather gets nicer. You get a fairly good deal for a monthly membership, but I think I might spend my money at the zoo or Children’s Museum instead.
  • You really should buy your admission ticket before you come. The first time you come, you need to create an account and it takes a little bit. The kids get restless. I am sure it is simpler to do once you have an account, but it’s a little tedious the first time.
  • There’s glass windows to look at the park while you are trying to pay. The kids get upset that they can see it, but can’t get it.
  • There aren’t any clocks. At least none that I saw. I was always wondering what time it was. It would be nice if there were at least some clocks in the picnic area.
  • The slides on the big playground are FAST! Thankfully the first time down scared Maddie and she wouldn’t go near it again. Little kids would be better off going down on their stomachs, feet first.
  • The big inflatable jumping pillow is great. The kids love it. But it’s annoying to take your shoes on and off when they go in and come out. I am sure you could just leave your shoes off the whole time, but the kids seem to play better and run around with them on.
  • The art corner is a great idea as well. But with crayons and markers….I can see this being a disaster down the road. They will color everywhere and it will get messy and hard to keep clean.

And here are pictures! I was the first one in there today, so I took lots of pictures.

Kompressor

Posted on April 26, 2013April 25, 2013 by Andi

Our Dyson vacuum was recently having issues. This gave us an excuse to get a new one. Our Dyson was ok, but we weren’t overly impressed enough to get another one. So we were on the hunt for a new one. I couldn’t decide what I wanted. Upright? Canister? Roomba? (Ok, the last one wasn’t actually something we were considering.)

*Side Note* I hate vacuuming. Well, cleaning in general. But for some reason, having your vacuum out of commission and not having one, really made me have the urge to vacuum. How strange!

Anyway…after lots of research (on Chuck’s part) and lots of watching videos (on my part), I decided I wanted a canister vacuum. They are good on stairs, carpet and hardwood. We ended up getting the LG Kompressor Canister PetCare Plus Vacuum Cleaner LcV900B. I was obsessed with it after watching this video. Ok, ok….I know you just want to see a picture. Here you go.

LG-Kompressor-Canister-PetCare-Plus-Vacuum-Cleaner-All-e1327454325918-898x1024

Yeah….it’s pretty sweet! I spent a bunch of time cleaning things. I still have a little learning curve with it after only using an upright vacuum as long as I can remember. But I love how easy it is to use, all the various attachments, how clean my floor is, how easy it is to empty, that it’s not too heavy to carry with the weight distributed in two hands and how it stores. It even keeps the tiny attachments inside the wheeled part. Brilliant.

If you are in need of a new vacuum, I highly recommend giving this one some consideration. I don’t think you’ll regret it. Now I need to go find something to vacuum. It’s just looking at me, anxiously waiting for me to do more cleaning.

Children’s Museum

Posted on April 25, 2013April 25, 2013 by Andi

We love the Children’s Museum! It’s not too far away and Chuck works in the connecting skyway, so we can go meet him for lunch. They have two floors full of various rooms for the kids. I can stay on just one floor for hours with Maddie and she doesn’t get bored. It’s wonderful! (Maddie has gotten so big since the last time I wrote about the museum!)

I just renewed my membership so I can have a free guest come with me. We already utilized it and brought Chuck’s mom with us. It’s fun for grandma to hang out and Maddie loves showing her everything!

I have pictures from a couple various trips we have taken there. It will be nice when Dannie is a little older and gets to enjoy in the fun, too! Although, she is pretty happy in her carrier watching all the kids run around!

The shopping and cooking area is her favorite. She could play there all day!

Some other random thoughts:

  • The fee to get in is a little high (not as bad as the zoo), but if you decide you want to get a membership, the cost of admission can be put toward a membership.
  • You can bring in your own food and eat it in the room they have with tables.
  • They have a coat room and lockers to leave your jackets or bags.
  • They do birthday parties.
  • They have an arts and crafts room.
  • There is an outdoor play room with lots of fun activities.
  • They have a nursing area and a floor that is just for reading and being quiet.
  • They have face painting and a photo booth.
  • Someone runs a story time or active play time in the rotunda (I think around 10:30, if I remember correctly).

If you haven’t been here with your kiddos yet, I highly recommend it! You could spend the whole day here!

Careful Eater

Posted on April 24, 2013April 23, 2013 by Andi

It’s no secret that Maddie is very clean when she eats. She doesn’t like her hands dirty and hardly gets food on her. We went to our neighbors’ son’s 3rd birthday party last weekend and Maddie displayed her cleanliness while she ate her cake.

Tea

Posted on April 23, 2013April 19, 2013 by Andi

I’ve been really into tea lately. I get herbal and rooibos tea because they don’t have caffeine in them. I add some rock sugar and a little honey to my tea. Mostly, I love having a hot drink that isn’t filled with tons of calories and junk like hot chocolate. Don’t get me wrong….I do still love hot chocolate, I just drink it very infrequently.

When I first started to buy tea, I could never make it taste good enough for me to enjoy drinking it. But I was eating a lot of sugar and soda at the time. Now that my tastes have changed, I have really started to LOVE my tea! I just got a tea kettle because I thought it would be easier for heating up water when I want more than one cup at a time.

If anyone else likes fruity tea, I tried some new ones from Teavana that are delicious!

  • Berry Kiwi Colada
  • Berry Almond Amaretto
  • Pomegranate Cranberry Crush
  • Apple Lemon Pomegranate
  • Peach Tranquility

I also still like the ones I started with. I have a mix of Blueberry/Strawberry and Strawberry/Orange. Both are fabulous!

  • Blueberry Bliss
  • Strawberry Lemonade
  • Wild Orange Blossom

Have you found any teas lately that you really like? Do you like sweeter, fruity teas like me? Do you like your tea hot or cold? Will you drink any kind of tea? Or do you dislike tea all together? I know it was a learning curve for me to find what I liked best and make it just the way I liked it.

Now I’m off to make some for myself. All this talk about tea made me thirsty!

Zoo

Posted on April 22, 2013April 19, 2013 by Andi

We go to the zoo quite often. It only takes us about 10 minutes to get there and we have a membership so I like to go frequently to make good use of it.

My brother was in the process of switching jobs (he starts his new job today!), so we went to the zoo last week while he had some free time. It was still cold, but we managed to see everything at the zoo. We even walked out to see the farm babies! (And chatted with a really friendly zoo keeper about the cows!)

The wolves were really friendly!

The Time Keeper

Posted on April 21, 2013April 19, 2013 by Andi

13624688

I flew through the book The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom. I had just finished another book and thought I would give this a try. My dad really likes this author. His books are Christian based and have a lesson or message. I couldn’t have read this book at a more perfect time.

After talking about how burnt out I have been, I needed this book and message. Here’s a summary:

For Albom fans, this adult fairytale will inspire and satisfy readers in search of a more meditative approach to life in a fast-paced yet wonderful world Irish Independent The theme of the book is not so much that we should gain more time, but that we should spend the time we have more wisely. And in that there is certainly a message for us all. This is an unforgettable story, poignant, inspirational and beautifully written.

I really liked this book. I thought it was written very creatively. It was from the view of three different people, in different times. And their stories all tie together in the end. I have been struggling to prioritize my time and use it more wisely, so this book really resonated with me.

One of the characters is a high school girl who is struggling with things in her life. As I was reading her story, I felt like this would be a great book for any young adult to read. With the new technology era and Facebook at our fingertips, bullying and high school is very different from the days when technology wasn’t as prevalent as it is today. If you have a young adult, I highly recommend they read this book. I think it will put a lot of things into perspective without it coming directly from mom and dad.

Happy reading!

Wild

Posted on April 20, 2013April 17, 2013 by Andi

For April, my book club read Wild (From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail). I have mixed feelings about this and I think my friends in book club do, too (from the few tidbits I have heard from them, at least). First, here’s the summary:

At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. My one issue was with the way she would go off on tangents about her previous life. At times, I didn’t think it added much to the story. After reading the whole book, though, I can see how these tangents work. But it was more distracting to me.

It was a good story about a woman growing into herself and becoming who she wanted to be. And that she needed to have nothing to realize she had something. It was empowering and showed how much strength a person who feels they don’t have anything actually has….how strong we can be when we need to be. Also, how vulnerable we can be (especially when you are alone), but how that vulnerability can be a good thing. Cheryl grows so much during this book and becomes a better person and truly finds herself.

We read this as our “action/adventure” book and I am not sure it was a great fit for that. I think it was more memoir than action, but live and learn. I thought it was a good book even though I struggled to get through it at times and even read another book while I was in the middle of this one!

If you’re looking for a book that will make you feel many varying emotions, read about some interesting characters and would like to read a good book about a woman figuring out who she is, this may be a good fit for you.

Happy reading!

IGM Gymnastics

Posted on April 19, 2013April 18, 2013 by Andi

Yesterday I told you about Gleason’s Gymnastics. Today, I’ll tell you about IGM Gymnastics. This is another local gymnastics studio that lets the kids just run around. There were some things I liked better about this place than Gleason’s and some things I liked less.

First, this place has a HUGE bouncy house and slide! Maddie wouldn’t go in it, but she was a bit crabby. I am sure with time, she will love it! I really wanted to go play on it, but Dannie was strapped to the front of me and it just seemed like a bad idea to jump on it with her. Smile

20130412_102637

There were lots of things for the kids to play on. I know Gleason’s changes things around every week, but since I have only been here once, I don’t know what they do. But it sure looked fun!

20130412_102743

20130412_102911

20130412_103435

Maddie isn’t sleeping in this picture, she’s trying to figure out how yet another thing works!

20130412_102658

There was also a big floor with balls for the kids to play with, more balance beams, and even a little play area for really small kids!

Unfortunately, they only had two trampolines for the kids to jump on, which was kind of a bummer. And the foam pit was much smaller here. Maddie loves playing in that. And the other downfall is that it is $8 per kid no matter how many kids. Gleason’s is $8 for one kid and $10 for more than one kid (family price) which is nice. I’m not sure if IGM has a punch card like Gleason’s has, either.

Since they are only open on Fridays, I probably will only be bringing Dannie with me next year since Maddie will be in preschool on Fridays, so it won’t matter too much to me, but it may matter to someone else.

So there’s my run down of the couple open gymnastics places I have been to! You should definitely give it a try if you have kids! They will love it!

Gleason’s Gymnastics

Posted on April 18, 2013April 18, 2013 by Andi

There’s a couple gymnastics studios around where kids can just run around and use the equipment. We have been going to Gleason’s and Maddie loves it. The first time she was there she was a bit skeptical, but she warmed up to it. By the next time we went, she was taking off her shoes and running to the trampolines before I could pay and get Dannie out of her car seat!

I love that there’s a place for her to run around and have fun. Especially when we seem to have a winter that just won’t end! If you have young kids, I highly recommend checking out this place or seeing if there is a gym like this in your area!

Sadly, when I was there yesterday, I found out that there is only one more week of open gym this season. I’m kind of bummed, but I understand there probably isn’t very good turn out during the summer. But just an FYI if you were going to check it out. But….there might be another local option. I’ll tell you about that one tomorrow!
